..\\ PERSONALITY
As with most people who have gone through the painful loss of a parent, especially a mother, Haruhi had to grow up fast, and thus has less of a sense of humor than most others her own age - some may even say she has a bone-dry humor and wit to her. She's a very sarcastic person, and quite often will snap off a snide comment about someone in her attempts to create a protective distance between herself and them. It was this protective wall that got her through years of pain and helped her to avoid those taking advantage of her, all the way up until her High School years.
People will find that she is quite often willing to open up to someone, anyone, if they're kind to her and show her honest and true friendship - but will immediately put up her sarcastic and bitter wall if something strange occurs. She doesn't like people to "rock" the boat of the norm, preferring that everyone just act as they should and not pretend to be something they aren't. Yet, somehow, she has found herself enjoying her act as a Host Club member, even if it's against everything she normally stands for in life.
She's very loyal, never backing down from a promise she's made regardless of what it is - and she's very dedicated to those she considers to be her friends. She also takes pride in knowledge and studying. As time has passed in the Host Club, Haruhi has also undergone a transformation of her own self confidence - able to hold her head high and her shoulders back down and face down any situation thrown at her - however things that are quite unexpected will always seem to throw her off and make her uneasy and spazzy.
She doesn't seem to be all that infatuated with the idea of love - either not wanting to break her friend Hikaru's heart by starting a relationship that might end their friendship, or being unsure about her feelings of "Lord" Tamaki - either way, she tends to keep her distance from romance and the ideas behind it. Love only causes problems for most people, right? Despite this, there are some that swear that either the more frustrating twin or Lord of the Host Club will one day win her heart, and break past that protective wall she keeps up.
..\\ ABILITIES AND STRENGTHS
Haruhi's best strength is her ability to keep somewhat of a level head among strife and fighting, often resulting in her trying to either be the voice of reason, or be the point everyone agrees on. She tries hard to be a peacemaker, thinking that arguments, fighting, and general mean-spirited conversation is pointless.
She's also quite smarter than she appears to be - most thinking she's a young, naive thing who can easily get talked into anything - quite the opposite, as she, without their knowing, will undermine their thoughts and beliefs and make them think what she wants was their idea in the first place. She doesn't use this often, but will in a pinch or when someone's being uncooperative.
She also has been taught how to use her lack of female anatomy to her advantage - often posing as a boy and getting her way through life easier - avoiding the more sexist types in the world who might hold her back if they knew she was a girl. Unfortunately this also means she's learned how to manipulate female hearts into doing as she pleases, but despises herself when she uses it, so will only bring that out when it's absolutely needed.
..\\ WEAKNESSES
She has a very low patience level, and combined with her dry humor and sarcasm she has been known to hurt a few sensitive feelings along the way. It's often said that she can seem to be cold and uncaring, bitter and almost bitchy in composure - but people can rest assured that this too shall pass, and she'll soon be back to her somewhat cheerful self in no time. Just try to avoid her until then.
Her sarcasm has gotten her in the most trouble, especially with those that take every word spoken seriously.
Her major downfall is that she is deathly afraid of thunderstorms and wind - and will immediately try to hide in an enclosed area such as a closet or wardrobe if one begins. She's also been known to hide under large pieces of furniture, shaking uncontrollably in fear until the storm finishes - anything from a bed to a dining room table will be used if it's available. If she hears thunder in the horizon, it will completely take over her thoughts and very being, keeping her in a constant panicked state until the storm passes.
..\\ DETAILED HISTORY
Haruhi grew up in a single parent household, raised by only her father after the untimely passing of her mother, a lawyer, when she was a young child. She took on the "housewife" title, doing the chores and usual motherly tasks around the home while her father worked out of the house as a popular okama (drag queen).
After gaining a special scholarship in the prestigious Ouran high school, she was required to always stay at the top of her class to maintain her new position. However one day while exploring for a much quieter and nicer place to study the material, Haruhi accidentally stumbles into the Third Music Room. She was mortified to discover a seemingly twisted group of young, rich men holding their "club" inside the four walls - and even more offended that they truly thought her scruffy looks - due on part to the fact the school uniforms were costly, she wore simple slacks and a polo shirt - were because she was a boy. Over sized glasses, baggy clothes, hair that hung limply in her eyes - she definitely wasn't the recipient of many longing looks in the school hallways.
In a panic, Haruhi made the mistake of backing directly into a podium with a very expensive vase perched atop it, valued to be worth ¥8,000,000. The vase unfortunately toppled over and onto the marble floors, shattering into thousands of pieces instantly. Being from a "commoner", poor, family, Haruhi would never be able to afford to pay for this, and begrudgingly agreed to work as the "dog" of this club, an errand boy of sorts. Thus her life-changing relationship with the Host Club began.
Once cleaned and dressed properly, the members of the Host Club were quite taken aback by how adorable she looked - many still considering her to be a boy based off her physical lack of curves, and the way she carried herself. It shortly thereafter that it was revealed that Haruhi was truly a female - however it didn't stop the "Lord" of the club, Tamaki, from placing her in a Host position. He had seen her abilities as one, she took to it quite naturally, and charmed many of the girls.
The only thing that she was never able to be used to was the Lord of the twisted game itself, Tamaki, who immediately claimed himself to be her "father", something that never seemed to stop creeping her out.
She quickly bonded to the Hitachiin twins, Hikaru and Kaoru, who were also in her class. At first she found their strange "forbidden brotherly love" act they put on for the customers to be sickening, but as time passed by, she learned to either ignore it or almost enjoy their mischief. She seemed to be one of the only people to figure out how to tell the difference between the two - quite often the hair being the giveaway - but also denied playing their little "which is which" game, stating that no-one would ever be able to tell them apart. However, even when they changed their hair to mimic the other twin, Haruhi was always able to tell the difference, stating that there were subtle differences in their personalities, such as one brother being a level meaner than the other. This caused them to become quite attached to her, and spend alot of their time circling around her - it sometimes reminded her of vultures.
She found herself a common target after that day for their flirtatious behavior, and as time went on, learned to begrudgingly accept it - even if Tamaki was spazzing out over every movement they made towards her. She also soon found herself caught up in a troublesome situation with the twin Hikaru's feelings towards her growing. Not wanting to spoil a friendship, she backed away from a possible romantic endeavor, focusing her attention on hosting.
The one major nuisance she found was the personality of "Lord" Tamaki. While nice enough with a streak of charm, Haruhi found him too unpredictable for her personal liking, and at times quite exhausting to be around. While one moment he would be suave and sophisticated, the next he would be flying off the handle at the slightest of occurrences. His near obsession with her "commoner" lifestyle proved to be the most frustrating for her - never in her life had she seen such behavior over something as simple as instant coffee, or lower-class food. She saw this behavior as rude and arrogant, and never found a way to appreciate it - only to ignore it.
However, as time passed, Haruhi found herself developing feelings for the blond boy, despite her attempts to remain separated romantically from the Host Club members. She had begun to see a quality in him - how passionate and caring he could be for those he held dearest and closest to his heart. She never quite pursued these feelings, unsure how to deal with them, and simply remained a host at his side.
It is how she has remained up until this point - an A-student at a prestigious school, masquerading as a male to entertain wealthy female classmates. A strange life, yes, but one she had grown to enjoy. Taken out of this lifestyle may prove hard for her to adjust to for quite awhile.
